The agent that sells inside the WhatsApp chat
WhatsApp went from service channel to point of sale. What an AI agent needs to recommend, build the cart and get paid without leaving the chat.
For years, WhatsApp was the channel where questions got answered. The sale happened somewhere else: in the store, on the website or on a call.
That is changing fast. On June 3, 2026, Meta introduced its business agent, able to recommend products from the catalog and close sales inside WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram. According to Meta, more than one million businesses already use it, and every day there are more than one billion active conversations between people and businesses across its apps.
The message for any business that sells is clear: the chat is no longer just service. It is shop window, advisor and checkout at the same time.
Answering is not the same as selling
A Q&A bot and an agent that sells can look the same on the first question. The difference shows up when the customer decides to buy.
| Criterion | Q&A bot | Agent that sells |
|---|---|---|
| Recommend a product | Sends the link to the full catalog | Asks what they need and suggests two or three options |
| Variants and prices | Points to the website | Confirms color, size or model at the current price |
| Stock | Does not know it | Checks inventory before offering |
| Payment | Asks them to buy on the web | Builds the cart and sends the payment link in the chat |
| After payment | Nothing | Confirms the order and records it in the CRM |
A full sale, message by message
An example with an office furniture store. The customer writes on a Tuesday night, when nobody is on the sales floor:
The same inquiry, handled by a Q&A bot and by an agent that sells

Agent that sells
- Customer: Hi, I'm looking for a chair to work from home, my back hurts
- Business: Happy to help. For back pain I recommend two models with adjustable lumbar support: the Ergo Pro at L 6,900 and the Ergo Plus, with headrest, at L 8,400. How many hours a day do you work seated? Charged · message 1
- Customer: About 8 hours. I like the Ergo Plus, do you have it in grey?
- Business: Yes, the Ergo Plus in grey is in stock and ships in 48 hours to Tegucigalpa at no cost. Shall I reserve it? I'll send you the payment link right here. Charged · message 2
- Customer: Yes, please
- Business: Done. Order: Ergo Plus grey, L 8,400, free delivery. You can pay by card at this secure link: [payment link]. As soon as payment is confirmed I'll send you the order number. Charged · message 3

The example is illustrative, but every step is a real function: catalog with variants, stock check, payment link and order record.
What an agent needs to sell
1. A catalog it can read. Products, variants and current prices, in a single source. If the price in the chat does not match the store’s, you lose the sale and the trust.
2. Up-to-date stock. An agent that offers something out of stock creates a complaint instead of a sale. Inventory has to reach it through an integration, not a file someone updates on Mondays.
3. A payment link. The customer pays without leaving the chat, through the gateway you already use. Native payment inside WhatsApp only exists in some markets, such as Brazil, but the link works in any country where you already take online payments.
4. Clear business rules. How much discount it can offer, which promotions are live, how much shipping costs and where it delivers. The agent sells within your policies; it does not invent them.
5. A clear handoff to a person. Special orders, discounts outside the rules or a customer who prefers to talk to someone. The agent hands over the conversation with the full history, and your team closes.
What happens after the sale
Selling in the chat does not end with the payment. The same conversation serves to confirm delivery, ask for a review or let the customer know when a product they looked for and did not find is back.
Mind the cost: since October 1, every business message on WhatsApp is billed, and reminders your business sends on its own initiative, such as an abandoned cart, are usually marketing templates, the most expensive category. Send them with judgment. We explain it in how to budget WhatsApp.
How Shimli handles it
Shimli Shop puts your catalog inside the conversation: products, variants and prices that the AI agent knows and recommends based on what the customer needs. The agent builds the cart, sends the payment link without leaving the chat and records every order. In the Shimli Shop panel your team sees sales, active orders and recent sales, and in the CRM, each customer’s history.
In 2025, more than $300,000 was sold through Shimli Shop. The same agent serves on WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger and your website chat, and hands over to a person on your team when the sale needs it. You create it by chatting with Shimli’s assistant in under 10 minutes, and adjust it by hand whenever you want.
Questions on this topic
- Can an AI agent collect payment inside WhatsApp?
- Yes, with a payment link. The agent builds the cart, generates the link from your payment gateway and sends it in the conversation; the customer pays without leaving the chat and the agent confirms the order. It works in any country where you already take online payments. Native payment inside WhatsApp only exists in some markets, such as Brazil.
- What happens if the customer asks for something the agent cannot handle?
- The agent hands the conversation to a person on your team, with the full history, so the customer does not have to repeat anything. You decide when: discounts outside the rules, special orders, complaints, or simply when the customer asks.
- Do I need a catalog on WhatsApp for the agent to sell?
- You need a catalog the agent can read, with products, variants, prices and stock kept up to date. It can live in your service platform or come from your inventory system through an integration. What matters is that it is a single source, so the agent never sells something out of stock or at an old price.
